The School’s Development Strategy

The School’s Development Strategy
         Development strategies for the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism (NKUHT) are established based on the development of vision, our mission, educational tenets and the foundation concepts of the university, which are specified and illustrated as follows:

         I. Vision:

         To be the hospitality university most capable of leading creation and development

         II. Mission:

         1. Be a sourceof hospitality elites

         2. Be a key partner of hospitality enterprises

         3. Be the new model for hospitality education

         III. Educational Tenet:

         Following the development mission forskill-based education, industry-academia R&D, Taiwanese roots and international extension of Taiwan’s hospitality industry, the university takes the idea “of educating excellent hospitality talents who would be dedicated to service and creation” as its educational tenet and grounds it in the spirit of being perfect, honest, diligent and modest.

         IV. Foundation Concepts:

         The university takes “Humanity, Professionalism, Entrepreneurship and Internationalization” as itscore values, which are specifically explained as follows:

         1. Humanity

         Based on the belief of “humanitarian care”, the university emphasizes educating students with healthy thinking, emotion and competency so that they can develop their talent, realize their potential and own the service characteristics of being sympathetic, tolerant, dedicated and friendly.

         2. Professionalism

         In regards to teaching “professional competency and skills”, the university emphasizes promoting open expression, thought, practice and creation abilities of students in order to provide them with the spirit of being prospective, practical and perfect withexcellent professional abilitiesfor application and solution.

         3. Entrepreneurship

         With the strategy of “enterprise-style operations”, the university implements the target of operating its campus with a business-likestyle in order to make the university a key partner of enterprises, effectively support R&D and the evolutionof the hospitality industry, fulfill its social obligations and enhance the nation.

         4. Internationalization

         With both the policies of “Localization” and “Globalization”, the university enhances teachers’ and students’ abilitiesto adapt to multiple lifestyles and the globalized society so that they can have the perspective of “rooted in Taiwan and taking a global view” to enhance their international view and competitiveness.

         V. Execution Strategies and Specific Measures:

         Each execution strategy and measure is planned according to the foundation concepts of “Humanity, Professionalism, Entrepreneurship and Internationalization”:

         ◎ Strategy 1: Educating excellent hospitality talents in accordancewith the educational policies of Taiwan

         Specific Measures:

         1. To implement the department-orientated development features according to the technical education concept of the government and the resources of relevant industries.

         2. To grasp the changing trends of society, provide students with the competency and skills thatcan benefit them throughout their lives and satisfy the demand ofhuman resources of hospitality and tourism industries.

         ◎ Strategy 2: Defining orientation and developing features

         Specific Measures:

         1. To define the university as a special school orientedtowardseducating operations and management talents for the hospitality field, to conform to the tourism policies of Taiwan and to develop such features at the university.

         2. To fulfill the orientation of the junior college, college and institute in practical skills, management capability and application research, respectively, to meet the demand of human resources of hospitality and tourism industries.

         ◎ Strategy 3: Constructing a university full of humanity and elegance and fostering the spirit of dedication and sociability.

         Specific Measures:

         1. Based on the keynote of humanitarian care, to educate students to havehealthy emotions, treat others sympathetically and tolerantly, develop their talents and realize their potential.

         2. To implement the study of service and to provide students with the characteristics of tolerance, independence, openness and beauty.

         3. To create the campus into a sightseeing spot and to educate the students to be respectful, modest, practical and macroscopic with the natural environment.

         ◎ Strategy 4: Promoting study results with teaching resources

         Specific Measures:

         1. To set up three major colleges – hospitality, cooking and tourism colleges in reference to the attribution of divisions, departments and institutes of the university and to establish the General Knowledge Education Center corresponding to the characteristics of the hospitality and tourism industries in order to integrate effective application of both college and center resources for promoting the study results of students.

         2. To combine domestic and foreign common sense of the industryand the academia of hospitality and tourism to develop an international hospitality college that meets domestic hospitality demandswhile keeping pace with the world.

         3. To adopt multiple methods of entry according to the attribution of each professional college.

         4. To establish study assessment indexes to confirm the study results of students.

         ◎ Strategy 5: Strengthening the teachingstructure for hospitality education and enhancing theprofessional ability of teachers

         Specific Measures:

         1. To fully apply a teacher appraisal system, classify teachers’ specialties, integrate teacher resources, foster the instructionability of technical teachers, strengthen practical experience of theoretical teachers and implement specialization of professional teachers.

         2. To assist teachers in establishing research groups, writing teaching schemes, formulating fund encouragement plans, delivering theses and promotional works and advance the research on industry-academia cooperation in order to enhance professional ability of teachers through the “Teaching Development Center”.

         3. To arrange teachers to take short-term advanced courses in renown domestic and foreign schools or study creation in relevant industries in Taiwan so that they can integrate practice with theories.

         4. To found the “Journal of Hospitality Technology” toquickly deliver and sharethe professional technical theses of teachers and encourage teacher development.

         ◎ Strategy 6: Planning and integrating resources to develop features of the university

         Specific Measures:

         1. Hardware

         a. To enhance utilization of the 3rd Teaching Building and expand the development space of the college.

         b. To build a “Multifunctional Activity Center” to improve functions of the university.

         c. To establish the 3rd Student Dormitory andimplement the policy of creating an elegant campus and promoting the international development of the university.

         d. To continuestrengthening the functions of the Logistics Center and integrate administrative and teaching resources in order to implement the reasonable allocation and application of resources.

         2. Software

         a. To balance the allocated structure of general knowledge and professional courses, set up the general knowledge course of hospitality and carry out the department-oriented courses that are full of humanity.

         b. To continue to strive for more projects in order to advance the development of the features of each college.

         c. To set up a virtual university network in order to accelerate R&D on digital teaching materials, use long-distance instruction to establish a social network, join forces with domestic and foreign hospitality courses and exert the competitiveness of “taking root in Taiwan and expanding internationally” of the university.

         ◎ Strategy 7: Deepening the administrative culture of “active participation and common sharing” within the university

         Specific Measures:

         1. To amend and enforcerelevant rules and regulations, implement the entrepreneurial sprit of retaining the fittest and removing the unfit, advance the transparency of university management information and provide complete teaching support services.

         2. To execute conference methodsat each level and strengthen the function of tracing, management and assessment.

         3. To expand the participation of peopleof the same trade, conduct rational allocation of resources, establish the common sense of unifying teacherswith administration and conform to the hospitality culture of “outfield is supported by logistics” of the service industry.

         ◎ Strategy 8: Activating multiple strategies for industry-academia cooperation and an alliance with the hospitality industry

         Specific Measures:

         1. To extend the cooperative methods between industry and academia, plan encouragement for participation of teachers in industry-academia cooperation, improve the quality of the hospitality industry, foster the ability of teachers and students in both creation and application.

         2. To strengthen functions of the “Hospitality Technology Research Center” for R&D, technical cooperation and technical transferswith the hospitality industry.

         3. To upgrade the Advanced Study & Promotion Department to the Advanced Study & Promotion College in order to promote the industry college andthe graduate institute part-time and industry-academia courses and facilitate lifetime study arrangement and recurring education.

         4. To establish a cooperativemethodwith industry – “Last Mile – Elite Internships”.

         ◎ Strategy 9: Establishing a national hospitality creation and research service platform

         Specific Measures:

         1. To strengthen the functions of the hospitality community center and establish transversal and horizontal cooperation with hospitality schools comprehensively at each level.

         2. To issue the Journal of Hospitality Technology and hold regular hospitality seminars.

         3. To acquireinformation relevant to domestic and foreign hospitality education and industries.

         4. To integrate specialties of different teachers into the university to create hospitality teaching materials full of local features.

         ◎ Strategy 10: Strengthening international cooperation and implementing internationalization inthe university

         Specific Measures:

         1. To found the “International Affairs Office” to promote business relevant to international cooperation of hospitality education.

         2. To plan and found the “International College” to recruit foreign students to study hospitality courses in Taiwan and recruit excellent foreign hospitality teachers to educate future international hospitality talents at the right time.

         3. To continueintroducing international hospitality certification programs and integrating professional courses and instructionto implement the synchronized internationalization of both study and teaching.

         4. To expand overseas internshipsforstudents and increase foreign cooperation with institutions in order to keep the sandwich teaching of the university synchronized with that of international universities and promote international competitiveness of students, as well as the international popularity of the university.

         5. To establish an Asian Pacific Alliance on Tourism and Hospitality to promotethe image of our nation’s hospitality technology and skills education.
